Gym Ball Pizza Oven

You may have seen these around (1,2, etc..). This is my take on it and anything that could have been done better. The biggest gym ball I could find locally was 70cm. The Formply was from a former project. Perlite from Bunnings. I found later that I could have saved money by going to an aquaponics specialist. I bought 4 of them. 5x 25L bags would have been better. Coreflute sheet. The 2 sheets of Formply where screwed together to form a larger surface. The 2 circles where engraved with a nail in a piece of wood that had the other end screwed into the middle, then rotated. The gym ball was over inflated to make sure it didn’t move, then covered in Cling-wrap. I would seek alternatives to Cling-wrap, I had a heck of a… Read More »Gym Ball Pizza Oven

Offset Smoker

This was done a few months ago, I just didn’t think to add it till now. I’ve wanted to make an offset smoker since I found out that my hot water system would need replacing. I got a fair way through the project when I couldn’t get accurate information on weather it was safe to leave the enamel lining on the inside. After a quick email to the original manufacturer it was confirmed it needed to be removed. It was too thick to remove with a flappy disk and grinder so it was abandoned. I saw an advert online for someone selling “kits” for $70 (AUD). 2 LPG tanks, 4 legs, and a chimney. The LPG tanks had already been venting for over a year, but I still filled with water for a few weeks… Read More »Offset Smoker

Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS)

This project started when I was doing a pork leg and it was too big (and tall) to fit in my old charcoal BBQ (18″ Eurochef kindly donated by a good mate). Old bricks  and clamps where to hold the lid down. After some research I found a DIY smoker called a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker). After much thought and research, I opted for a food safe drum (stupid move) from a chocolate factory, formally it was full of sucrose. So far I’ve invested $5. . Checked the local fire laws – unfortunately our shire does not allow burn off’s,incinerators or fire pits. To be honest our property isn’t big enough and I’m not a huge fan of the toxic fumes. I emailed a few local businesses to get quotes for sandblasting, the best came… Read More »Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS)

Smoker/Kettle BBQ Controller

After tasting some awesome BBQ offered in the US, I wanted to try making it myself. I’ve tried to use a gas BBQ, but it always turned out dry and tough. I moved to a charcoal kettle grill and wanted to be able to have more control of the temperature. Options: manual control – Continuously checking the temperature on the gauge that came with the BBQ. Buying a professional smoker – big $$. Make my own controller – When researching I found a professional BBQ team that used a controller that adjusted the temperature using a fan and temperature probes. I was kindly given a European Outdoorchef BBQ (cheers Chris), and I’ve been using it to smoke a few cuts of meat, the largest and latest was a 4kg pork leg roast. When I get… Read More »Smoker/Kettle BBQ Controller
